Clean those ducts – Remember to clean your air ducts regularly

When it comes to the upkeep of your house, it’s easy to focus on what you can see. But it’s important to remember to make things like cleaning your air ducts a part of your regular house maintenance regimen.

There are two major advantages to getting your air ducts cleaned. The first one is that it ensures high indoor quality. This is a no-brainer: if there is less debris in the ducts that distribute and circulate your air, the air quality will be better. The second is clean ducts can save you money – your HVAC system will be more efficient and last longer, saving you money on energy costs, repairs and replacement.

But what is “regular” when it comes to cleaning your air ducts? The number varies from anywhere to 1 -5 years. How often depends on both lifestyle and situational factors. Lifestyle factors include if you have pets, or if anyone in your house smokes or has asthma, sensitivities or allergies. Situational factors can include if you have had a recent renovation that was particularly messy or water damage that may have reached the vents and formed mold.

The best way to determine if your ducts need cleaning is to get them looked at by a professional. A regular inspection of your HVAC system is the best way to ensure it’s working at its peak, and the ducts are an essential part of that system.  Our HVAC professionals can let you know if your ducts need cleaning or if it can wait, before you spend the money on the service. PRO TIP: If you’re doing a particularly messy renovation job in a room that could result in a lot of airborne debris, such as mudding and sanding drywall for example, close the vents in the room to stop it from getting in the ducts. You can also run a few strips of masking tape over the duct to completely seal it, and remove it once you’ve completed your task. Just be sure that you have a window open or other ventilation if the task you are doing requires you being in a well-ventilated area.
